A White Gay’s Guide on How to Deal with the Black Community for Dummies: Chapter 17: The Faggot vs. Nigger Conundrum

Be a Black man in Hollywood who is not gay and use the word “faggot.”  You’ll never work again—at least not in the mainstream.  But be a white man in Hollywood caught on tape calling for his girlfriend to get rapped by a “pack of niggers,”—and it’s business as usual.

Now to be frank, I could care less about Mel Gibson, really I could.  He doesn’t do anything for me.  But what I do care about is the deafening silence from the oh so politically correct gay community who literally ruined my man Isaiah Washington’s career behind hearsay when media reports said that Washington grabbed Grey’s Anatomy co-star Patrick Dempsey by the throat during an argument and called co-star T.R. Knight a “faggot” in 2006. An even though Washington issued a statement apologizing for his “unfortunate use of words during the recent incident on-set,” when the cast appeared at the Golden Globes in January 2007 Washington, in response to press queries as to any conflicts backstage, said that he had never referred to Knight as a “faggot” and it was off with his head.  Even though in an interview with Ellen DeGeneres, Knight said he never directly heard Washington use the epithet in the first damn place.

Now you tell me which is worse, an actor’s alleged use of the word “faggot”—alleged because to my knowledge, video or audio of the initial incident has yet to surface or an actor’s audio recordings calling a woman a whore, cunt, and being told she’s asking to get raped by a “pack of niggers?”

No don’t tell me–I’ll tell you.  Mel Gibson’s rant is much worse.  One because there is no alleged to it, that’s his voice and his threats.  It’s not third party unverified information taking for truth because it came from gay America’s poster boy.

This isn’t apples and oranges.  Isaiah’s an actor, Mel’s an actor.  And just like gays were offended by the his alleged use of the word “faggot” they should be all over Mel’s blatant use of the word “nigger” not to mention “cunt,” and “whore,” I’m just saying.  Hate speech is hate speech.

Aren’t Black gays a part of gay America?  Might they be offended?  Aren’t white gays still trying prove they’re down with the Black community so they can get them to co-sign on marriage?  It takes more than just moving into our neighbrohoods to show you’re down. So what the hell are you waiting for—an evite in your inbox to denounce Gibson’s racist tirade?  I mean really—you and I just know it’s just a press release.  That you aren’t going to really spend the same amount of time and energy you spent on ruining Izzie’s career on Mel Gibson.  But for appearances sake, I’d think that you’d want to go ahead and get a statement up and out.  I’m just saying, it would have saved me from having to type this.

Many of us want to see the same effort that went into blacklisting Isaiah Washington hurled at Mel Gibson from the gay community.  Shit you run Hollywood, well you and those other people Mel doesn’t particularly care for either.

And no—this is not an invitation for you to speak up for or on behalf of Black people, gay or otherwise—so don’t get any ideas for your puppets.  This is a one time only invite—or until the next B or A list white actor/actress says something racist towards Blacks, for you to practice what you preach–courtesy of Mel the racist Gibson.

The Court of Public Opinion

  • I just had to all the way co-sign this one and let you know how much i respect what you just said. I see you catch a lot of flack from gay whites as if you are a trader or something. Its annoying and so fucking ridiculously ignorant of them in my opinion. Much respect for continuing to speak your mind and saying what many wont. I dont think you speak for all blacks, or all black gays, or any large group as you are one person….but i damn sure agree with you most of the time and am willing to bet there are many others that do too.

    peace.

I absolutely agree that Gibson’s behavior, including his language, is absolutely abhorrent and he should be blacklisted (no pun intended) from filmmaking forever. Clearly he is a deranged racist and while I see your point about Washington to some extent, I don’t think you can excuse his behavior either. On Ellen’s show, Knight didn’t say he didn’t hear Washington call him a faggot. He said, and this is a direct quote, “Everyone heard it.” Washington’s hate speech is no better and no worse than Gibson’s. Neither should be tolerated.

  • ALocke

I love how the media was all up in arms over what happened with Isaiah Washington and yet when Gibson goes into yet another one of his bigoted tirades there were people making excuses for what he did. “Oh, he’s bipolar” “Oh, he DIDN’T mean it” “Shouldn’t we be focusing on him beating his wife instead?” It’s disgusting. I believe what Gibson did was a lot worse because not only did he imply that he wanted his wife to be raped, he allegedly beat her and did so while trucking around the usual stereotypes and fears of black men. Why do some white men think that our men are interested in their women? It’s been one of their many motivators for lynchings, slavery, Jim Crow, police brutality, you name it. Talk about projection.

  • Ivy

To me the worst of all is that that fucking asshole Isaiah grabbed Patrick by the throat!
    F*ckung murderer!!!

  • Harry

I don’t know if it’s fair to criticize the gay community for not standing up for the black community in this one instance. It’s not like the black community as a whole has been completely accepting of gay rights. In fact, it’s been very disturbing how silent, and in many cases opposed, the black community has been when it comes to things like marriage, housing, and employment equality, since it’s an issue that the black community fought for in recent history. As a gay man I agree it was very wrong for Gibson to use this language, and I know his career will suffer severely for it (as it should). However, it’s important to look at the larger picture here, and I think the African American community has a lot to answer for when it comes to the gay rights movement.

  • Jboogie

Harry, I think you completely missed the point. Your assignment is to go back and read all 16 chapters of A White Gay’s Guide on How to Deal with the Black Community for Dummies.

  • Ok Harry Boo…Lets break it down..I’m late with this one.

You said:It’s not like the black community as a whole has been completely accepting of gay rights.
So I am assuming that entire white community has???? Ok Gov Linda Lingle, Maggie Gallagher, The entire Republican Senate, etc who are all white. They’re not completely accepting of Gays neither.

You said:. In fact, it’s been very disturbing how silent, and in many cases opposed, the black community has been when it comes to things like marriage, housing, and employment equality,

OK as for Marriage there have been many Blacks religious and non-religious who have spoken out for Marriage equality Alice Huffman who at the time was President of the L.A Chapter of the NAACP for one endorsed it. I think because of the whole after Prop 8 situation you and many white Gays felt appropriate to blame ALL BLACKS. At that point it was not about a Gay debate it was white -vs- black. PERIOD!

As FOR housing, and employment equality: Are you kidding me??? The white girls have flooded, WEHO in Cali, and in S Florida Wilton Manors, and in NYC Chelsea, and in Phoenix Central Phoenix, and in all through San Francisco. And the median rent is 1500$ starting for a studio????? Jobs white gays have great jobs and RULE AND RUN things in the Gay commuity and how many have gotten laid off in this recession??? Black Unemployment is 15% and Hispanics is 13 %. And I know for a fact white Gays are no where near that!!!!

So lets STOP with the blaming and move toward a somewhat cohesive understanding to each other. It’s the only way things will move forward!

  • V

I believe actually that TR said that he heard the word…everyone heard the word.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6DfRkRf0Wks&feature=related

And actually yes, this is apples and oranges. Gay groups were all over Isaiah because it was a gay issue. Gay groups are horrified by Mel Gibson, and in fact I believe you would be hard pressed to find anyone not horrified, and have spoken out about Mel Gibson in the past. In the 90’s when Gibson was spewing anti gay and anti semitic things I don’t believe black organizations came out to stand with gay groups. And I don’t think it was necessarily wrong of those groups not to get involved.

I also see the media completely up in arms over Mel and see the blogosphere on fire denouncing Mel, in fact the only person who I have seen come out and speak to his defense so far has been Whoopi Goldberg…go figure.

  • DeShawn

Mel stinks and equally hates and IW’s words were vile, but, as usual, the black guy will get canned and in a year or so Mel will be right back on top, after all, he still has his looks and to many of the white gay’s that gives him a pass no matter what he says, even gay slurs.

  • DeShawn

And, oh yeah to the poster that says Whoopi gace him a pass, for crying out loud, we all know Whoppi LOVES her some white men, just as much as white gays despise black men, gay ro straight, so, her lame words carry no clout in the real world.

And, why would any black person, gay or straight join with white gays, when we all know how you all really feel LOL!

  • If Isaiah Washington was a superstar whose blood soaked movies make billions of dollars, his argument with another actor on a tv show would have been forgotten. The only color that counts in Hollywood is green.

  • Cocoa Butter

I actually think this will be the end for Gibson. His management company has dropped him and I honestly don’t think anyone will go near him with a ten foot pole.

  • God

You can’t get any more white and gay than Andrew Sullivan and he’s all over the story. As for the rest of gays of colorlessness, we’ve been giving Mel Gibson his ration of shit for more than twenty years. Mel Gibson’s sexualized racism and extreme misogyny toward the mother of his child say everything about him. I think he’s crazy and evil. I wouldn’t be surprised if he killed someone.

  • elg

Isaiah Washington’s use of the word “faggot” was worse because he meant to hurt a gay man. Mel Gibson’s use of the word “nigger” was not intended for anyone’s ears except his WHITE girlfriend.

Of course, you’re not distressed by the word faggot, Jasmyne, because you’re NOT a gay man. I am a black gay man who has been called a sissy, punk, fag/faggot ALL my life. Including even by my so-called relatives at family functions. You know how black people are. For this reason, I HATE Isaiah Washington. I’m GLAD the white gay mafia got him “blacklisted”. The next black man (or black woman) who wants to make it in Hollywood will think twice about using the word.

Isaiah should have kept his mouth shut and he would still be making $3,000,000 a year. Dumb nigger!

  • I agree that race is part of the reason Isaiah Washington’s career was hurt dramatically by the TR Knight scandal.

GLAAD, Ellen Degeneres, and the gay media attacked Washington but I believe they do have a point.

Washington’s behaviour was totally unacceptable and wrong.

Washington obviously didn’t get the memo when you are black in the workforce even an acting set
you have to be very careful in how you act.

Is there a racist double standard? Absolutely I agree there is.

I also agree that Mel Gibson is being treated differently not just because he is white but also because he is A list. Gibson is super rich he doesn’t need Hollywood to have a career anymore.

Mel has been criticized by the mainstream press I’ve read numerous articles attacking his behaviour.

Remember the Passion of the Christ made over $600 million dollars he is extremely powerful regardless of the fact his agents dumped him.

However, Jasmyne I believe Isaiah was definitely wrong he should not have attacked Dempsey or called Knight a faggot it was very unprofessional behaviour.
Also, Washington is a black man in Hollywood it is so sad he didn’t realize that being black in Hollywood means you get judged harder and unfairly.

I think in the end Washington and Gibson both screwed up BUT Washington is not A list or white like Mel Gibson.

Although Will Smith, Halle Berry, and Denzel Washigton are A list black actors Hollywood is still a very racist and sexist industry.

  • RTF

LOLOL! So what if Mel use the word nigger! For all the people who said that he should be blacklisted, what about the other asshats that use the word faggot that are in the rap/hipp hop industry that are black? So we should give them a free pass?

Whatever! Get a clue and a life jasmyne! Isaiah Washington deserve to be booted out because of his mouth! Think before you speak! Maybe you should follow that advice sometimes and maybe, just maybe people will begin to like you when you sit down and think abou the racist foolish that comes out of own mouth! Go over to the heterosexual side and kiss up to them! Enjoy your nightmares when you lay down at night after they kick you to the curb!

  • Dave

I hate BOTH words, and as a white gay I vowed never to see another Mel Gibson movie again and encouraged my friends to do the same.

Jasmyne, how do you feel about 50cent recently saying if a man doesn’t lick pussy he should just kill himself? This kind of hate speech in the wake of the recent LGBT youth suicides is just unacceptable and should be condemned by people of all race, creed, and orientation.

  • Frank

Jasmyne just likes stirring shit. She was the first to gloat after Prop 8 was passed and she stirred up racial animosity. She acted surprised when it was returned. She has about as much right to cry “racism” as David Duke does.

  • Pursuit

Dave, the people who make those songs are producing and selling to straight White men who hate just about everyone who isn’t like them. Straight White men are the majority of buyers when it comes to shitty music.

Also there needs to be a mutual exchange of support for each others’ equality–legally and socially. Everyone needs to do something helpful to each other without being prompted by “we’ll help you if only you’d help us!” because if we don’t, no one’s going to do anything at all!
