Reggae artists Beenie Man and Sizzla have signed a new agreement, The Reggae Compassionate Act, that invites all people to enjoy their music without fear of violence. This comes after a series of lound protests regarding the lyrics of some reggae artists that call for the murdering of gays (see above video).
The Reggae Compassionate Act states that they "respect and uphold the rights of all individuals to live without violence due to their religion, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity or gender.
While Beenie Man and Sizzla are on board, a number of other reggae acts have not signed up for the campaign, including Elephant Man, TOK, Bounty Killa, Vybz Kartel, and Buju Banton.
Interesting, although it shouldn’t have to come to this.
I wonder if we can get something similar for rappers and their use of derogatory language a it relates to women and gays.
