On Tuesday, July 29 – the start of the fifth week without a state budget – California State University, Dominguez Hills will host a community town hall on the topic with Assembly Speaker Karen Bass (D-Los Angeles) and local representative Assemblyman Warren Furutani (D-Gardena).

Scheduled to begin at 6 p.m., the event will take place in the Dominguez Ballroom at the Donald P. and Katherine B. Loker Student Union on campus. It will be open to the public.

The state began its fiscal year on July 1 without a budget, as leaders of both parties grappled with how to bridge the $15.2 billion budget gap in the $101 billion general budget. With money in reserves expected to dry up by mid-August, legislators have said they hope to have a resolution and pass the budget soon, despite dire conditions.

To clear up any misinformation about the state budget and its process, Speaker Bass – who received her bachelor’s degree from CSUDH in 1990 — and Assemblyman Furutani will address the community on the current budget dilemma. Topics such as education, healthcare, public safety and other pertinent issues facing California will be discussed. The public will be invited to ask questions.
