(EURweb.com) A Toronto concert venue has chosen to cancel separate shows by dancehall artists Sizzla and Elephant Man after Canadian advocacy groups accused the two of using homophobic slurs in their lyrics.
According to the Toronto Star, Sizzla was scheduled to perform at Kool Haus last Friday, and Elephant Man had an Oct. 6 gig scheduled at the same Toronto venue. But both were cancelled after a coalition of 20 organizations – collectively called Stop Murder Music Canada – called for the artists to be banned.
"They shouldn’t have been allowed to get visas to perform in the country. It’s not about censorship or artistic freedom. That stops when hate propaganda is involved," coalition founder Akim Larcher told the Toronto Star.
In 2004, Elephant Man’s appearance at Britain’s Mobo Awards was cancelled after he refused requests to change his homophobic lyrics.
