VOX® Vodka and Out magazine are proud to honor up-and-coming photographer Duane Cramer with the VOX/Out Emerging Voices of Style + Design Award. The highly respected industry award was created in 2001 by VOX Vodka and Out magazine to honor openly gay and lesbian individuals whose works have come to signify style, vision and design. To commemorate its fifth year, VOX and Out will be honoring artists and designers who are just beginning to establish a name for themselves – a new focus for the coveted award.
One of five honorees nationwide, Cramer was nominated by his peers and selected by the editors of Out magazine and a prestigious panel of past VOX/Out recipients. He will receive the VOX/Out Emerging Voices of Style + Design Award at Levende San Francisco on August 25.
Cramer has captured the images of gay celebrities such as Reichen, Ari Gold, Michelle Wolf, Keith Boykin and the actors of the new Logo television series Noah’s Arc. As a published fashion photographer, Cramer’s work has included notables such as RuPaul, Brooke Shields and Italian actress Maria Grazia Cucinotta. He has also photographed images of several prominent politicians including San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown. In 2004, he was commissioned to take the official portrait of the Mayor currently hanging in City Hall. Samples of his work can be viewed at www.duanecramer.com.
Cramer’s photographs are thought provoking and insightful images of people that juxtapose the public and private personae, intimately revealing richness and the humanity in each. With this style and approach, each image uncovers aspects beyond the unexpected – whether they are international superstars, politicians, stunning models, and private or commissioned portraits. It is Cramer’s innate sense of light and composition coupled with his artistic eye and charismatic personality that have made him the new photographer of choice.
In addition to being a talented photographer, Cramer is also an active member of his community. He serves as the Vice President of Frameline, the largest and oldest LGBT Film Festival visual arts organization in the world, and also dedicates his time to the Black AIDS Institute.
“In addition to Duane’s creative eye behind the lens, his generosity and commitment to the community are truly admirable,” said Mary Therese Kraft, associate brand manager for VOX Vodka. “VOX prides itself on quality and style, so we are pleased to recognize Duane for his artistic talent.”
Recognized as the city’s premier emerging artist, Cramer joins a prestigious list of VOX/Out award winners and visionaries in the field of style and design. Previous VOX/Out Voices of Style + Design Award recipients include Todd Oldham (New York), Nate Berkus (Chicago) and James Swan (Los Angeles).
“We’re proud to honor Duane with the VOX/Out Emerging Voices of Style + Design Award,” said Joe Landry, publisher of Out magazine. “When it comes to style and aesthetics, Out’s readers are passionate and extremely involved; Duane’s dedication and talent are truly admirable.”
"I am thrilled to be receiving this prestigious award," said Cramer. "I am truly honored and humbled to be recognized by my peers, VOX Vodka and Out magazine.”
