There’s been a lot of griping and mumbling about the lack of public outrage or even visible concern by Los Angeles area politicians regarding the shooting death of 25-year-old Ezell Ford in South Los Angeles by a pair of LAPD officers.  It has been nearly two weeks since police fatally shot Ford, a Black man who was unarmed and said to be mentally ill. Despite pressure from the community and a court ruling that says that officers can be identified, the LAPD has still refused to name the officers involved.

Last week during a town hall meeting, LAPD Chief Charlie Beck said that the Department might identify the officers soon, but that was before the release of a video by local aspiring rap artist Ceebo Tha Rapper titled “Fuck Tha Police.”  Since the video’s release, the LAPD is now claiming that it raises safety concerns for all officers and is a factor in deciding when to name the officers who shot Ford.

A recent ruling from the California Supreme Court determined that police departments should release the names of officers who fire their guns in the line of duty unless there is a specific threat against those officers.  Despite calls from the family of Ezell Ford and the community to do just that, the LAPD has declined to do so and is now using the video as justification.  This even though the artist behind the song and video has made it clear that he is not a member of a gang targeting police officers in Los Angeles.

But let’s get back to the politicians, who although are quick to say that they represent the voice and will of the people have had very little to say about the death of Ford or the releasing of the officer’s names in the spirit of transparency.

So why is that?

Community members complaining about the lack of attention paid to the death of Ford by their local representatives need to step back and do their homework so that they can have a fundamental understanding of how politics works and why things are the way they are.

I don’t make the rules, but I’m more than happy to explain them in laymen’s terms.

First and foremost, the people most upset over Ezell Ford’s death are not known to be voters and we all know there are two types of people who get the attention of politicians–donors and voters.

Never forget that politicians need the police as much as the police need politicians.

I haven’t met a candidate yet who ran and won on a “soft on crime” platform.

Police need politicians to make sure that 50 percent of the City’s budget is spent on law and order and that those same politicians also appoint police friendly folks to the police commission.

Mr. and Mrs. Law Abiding Voter for the most part doesn’t factor into this equation at all until it’s time for the politicians to come hat in hand asking for their vote. A vote that ironically tends to be rewarded to the politicians viewed as being the most tough crime.

The Los Angeles Police Protective League is the union that represents about 9,900 rank-and-file Los Angeles police officers. Their job is to protect the interests of police officers both politically and within the Department.  Similar to the California prison guards union, one of the most feared political forces in the state, the LAPPL has poured millions into the campaign coffers of politicians who pledge to support the union’s agenda.

There’s nothing particular secretive or even wrong about the police officer’s union donating money to political campaigns, given the fact that it is the accepted and expected way of doing business that we’ve long since established in this country as it relates to politics.  But to the point that it’s not always about what it is but rather what it looks like in politics, one can’t overlook the amount of money given by the union to politicians representing South Los Angeles in particular and those elected officials deafening silence on the death of Ezell Ford.

To those community activists upset, I’ll leave you with this: once you understand how the game is played, you can become a better player.  Take a look at the list below.  I wouldn’t expect any real support from elected’s in city hall who have received money from the LAPPL or for communities who don’t traditionally vote.

Below are the LAPPL’s most recently reported campaign finance contributions.  Numbers that can easily be found online by visiting cal-access.ss.ca.gov.
