I’m leaving the California sunshine for Atlanta today.

The occasion, to celebrate some of the brightest and most talented people in the Black same-gender loving community, the CLIK Magazine Elite 25 Awards.

After years of Black gays not being recognized in the Black community and the mainstream gay community, Black community activist and publisher Dwight Powell decided to create and awards ceremony specifically tailored to the Black LGBT community.

With support from many of the Black LGBT organizations, including the National Black Justice Coalition and the Black AIDS Institute, and corporate presenting sponsor Delta Airlines, Black lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people will celebrate an evening of unity and community amongst each other in Atlanta, otherwise known as the “Black gay Mecca.

I am very excited about this event because for me it proves that if you want something bad enough and you’re willing to do it, you can accomplish anything.

I can count repeatedly the times that people in our community have been overlooked for their amazing achievements in politics, media, activism, sports, and arts & entertainment.  And true enough, I have no problem calling it out either, but at the same time it begs the question, do we really care what they think about us anyway?  Isn’t it more important to be recognized by your community and peers?  I think so.

That’s the vision that Dwight captured and ran with and now through hard work and dedication has brought to fruition.

And the outlook is good for us going into 2007.  We have several national magazines now, CLIK, NYANSAPO courtesy of NBJC, and Tom Boyz Quarterly to name a few.  We also have a national civil rights group, the National Black Justice Coalition and our own Black AIDS think tank with the Black AIDS Institute, not to mention the countless local organizations in various states that work hard to ensure that our community is represented on every level.

So anyway, I hope you have a great weekend and I’ll be back in action on Monday.

If you’re in Atlanta, I hope you will join us for the inaugural CLIK Magazine Elite 25 Awards on Saturday night at Fabulous Fox Theatre.  It will be a historic event that you don’t want to miss.
