I knew I wasn’t trippin when I said…
I feel that the European standard of what is considered beautiful has brainwashed a lot of our sistas to the point of no return. Whether it’s the plastic surgery, ridiculous hair weaves and wigs flowing down our backs, or our love affair with blonde hair—August 11, 2008
Even though I know it’s in jest, Tyler Perry as Madea in a blonde wig caught the attention of the folks over at TMZ who then felt it necessary to point out the obvious. And regardless of it being a joke, I do believe that all of these images play a part in how Black women and young Black girls see themselves ad sends a certain message about what is still the standard for beauty.
So I guess I need to change my quote to include…”I feel that the European standard of what is considered beautiful has brainwashed a lot of our sistas and brothas to the point of no return.”
I wonder if Michelle Obama will ever rock some cornrows or individuals as the First Lady. The reality is that damn near every Black woman has worn or wears braids. Even with my locs, I still wear my hair in cornrows as often as possible…
Just a thought.
