It’s official. State Assemblymember Laura Richardson has officially been sworn into office as the newest member of the House of Representatives representing California’s 37th Congressional District.
Sworn into office on Tuesday evening on the floor of the House in D.C., Richardson became the 26th African-American female to be elected to Congress and holds the distinction of being one of the only people in U.S. history to serve in the span of one year at the local, state, and Federal levels of government. Prior to be elected to the House of Representatives, she served on the Long Beach City Council and in the State Assembly.
She replaces the late Congresswoman Juanita Millender-McDonald who passed away in April from cancer. California’s 37th Congressional District includes Long Beach, Compton, Carson, Watts and Willowbrook.
