Jamila, Emerging Artist Profile (Independent)
I first came across Jamila at this year’s Pan African Film and Arts Festival. I dropped in to see the Love Shorts Program and she starred in "Near Mrs.," a film by writer Sylvia P. Hillman about a young woman who didn’t recognize Mr. Right when she met him. What really moved me about the film was the soundtrack. I remember walking out the theatre saying to myself, it’s time to do a Google search.
Low and behold I found Jamila on myspace.com and as luck would have it, she lived in Los Angeles. We hooked up and the rest is history.
If you like Meshell Ndegeocello, Les Nubians, and Jill Scott, then Jamila would be right up your alley. Tracks include the Brazilian beat Clovo, while Bee Free is an easy Sunday afternoon listen. More favorites include Oooh and Love Lust.
While Jamila doesn’t have a full album in stores yet, she has a demo album definitely worth buying. You can check Jamila and her tracks out at myspace.com/jamila3. Jamila is definitely one to keep your eyes out for and check out "Near Mrs." if you get a chance.
