Duffy – Rockferry
Be sure to check out Welsh singer Duffy’s debut album Rockeferry in stores now. She has a hauntingly beautiful voice that’s both nostalgic and serious. A singer and songwriter, Rockferry features a collection of original material that is reminiscent of retro. Recorded straight to tape, the album has a charisma all its own. Highlights include the defiantly catchy “Mercy,” my album favorites “Serious,” “Stepping Stone,” and “Hanging On Too Long.” Rockferry was recorded in England with ex-Suede guitarist turned record producer Bernard Butler, Jimmy Hogarth and Steve Booker.
If you like real songs about the trials and tribulations of life and love, then Duffy’s ‘Rockferry’ is a breathe of fresh air.
Estelle – Shine
Also on the radar, 27-year-old West London girl Estelle and her sophomore release Shine. Estelle, a singer, songwriter, producer, and rapper, made the move from ondon to NYC last year to work on Shine. She’s the first artist to release under John Legend’s new Homeschool label, in partnership with Atlantic Records. Shine marks the first time Estelle has brought other producers and artists into the creative process with her, and she’s excited by the scope of the music that has come out of these collaborations. Kanye West, Swizz Beatz, Wyclef Jean, will.i.am, Mark Ronson and Cee-Lo & Jack Splash all lend their talents to the album, which is executively produced by John Legend. Shine is an original mix of sounds. Where Senegal meets London and hops the pond. Where funk shimmies up against reggae and R&B. Somewhere out of this world is where you’ll find Estelle. Favorites include the hip funky dance tune “American Boy” featuring Kanye West and “Wait A Minute (Just A Touch).” Shine is in stores now.
Kudos to DJ Kristi Lomax for turning me on to yet another West London artist, LryicL.
LyricL is a rapper, emcee, songwriter, and singer whose has worked with the likes of Wyclef, MJ Cole, Drew Horley, Seiji, Nathan Haines, DJ Spinna (New York producer for MosDef), Anthony Tidds (Roots) and Big Daddy Kane. I checked out some of her work online and became an instant fan. Think Floetry, but with one person possessing the gift to spit and flow. Check her out at http://www.myspace.com/lyricl.
