When that rebate check hits your bank account or mailbox, don’t fall for the bullshit. Resist the urge to go and get those rims, gold chains, and 70-inch plasma screens. Put the gold teeth on hold. In fact, don’t do a damn thing with the money. Just save it.
It’s the one thing that the Bush Administration and Congress aren’t expecting us to be able to do. To be honest, neither are the retail stores, which are working over time at trying to lure us in with all kinds of “deals.”
Spending that rebate check won’t bring gas prices down. It won’t change the housing market crisis. And it won’t bring back the American economy.
But not spending that check will send a message that we can’t be bought off or shut up with a few hundred dollars. And that it’s going to take a lot more than a rebate check to stimulate the economy, because at the end of the day, the government is giving back your money to you and damn near forcing you to spend it so that it goes right back to them.
When you think about it, it’s really an ingenious plan, but not one that I’m falling for.
