California Assemblywoman Karen Bass was sworn in today as speaker of the California Assembly at the Capitol in Sacramento, making her the first Black woman, and the second woman period, to serve as Assembly speaker. Bass was chosen by her peers in February to lead the 80-member Assembly.

She says her first job is going to be to work with the Governor and state lawmakers on California’s budget crisis.

Hallelujah! With her on th job we might actually get somewhere because if there’s one thing I know about our new Speaker, and my Assemblywoman, it’s that she takes care of business. Of my top three favorite electeds in California, she has been one of them from the moment she got elected and in record time pushed through needed legislation showing her colleagues how it’s done.
