Album: Play With the Changes
Label: Raw Canvas Records
File Under: Nu Jazz; Electronica
4hero is back again with their latest offering “Play With the Changes.” “Play With the Changes” is a surprising break from the monotonous mumbo jumbo playing on most music formatted radio stations today.
From Dollis Hills, North London, the group is comprised of Dennis ‘Dego’ McFarlane and Mark ‘Marc Mac’ Clair.
And while is has been six years since their last full album, it was defintiely worth the wait. There are 17 tracks on the album, which fit into the nu jazz genre, but it certainly isn’t limited to that one category because the album is as much nu jazz as it is soul, electronica, and funk.
Featuring a stellar line up of guest vocalists, 4hero has created yet another timeless album that can go from the car, to the living room, and even to the bedroom.
Guest vocalists this time around include the distinctive, sultry, and always welcoming styles of Ursula Rucker on the track “The Awakening.” A new favorite of mine is the title track “Play With the Changes” that features Talita Long and Larry Mizzel. Darien Brockington and Phonte of Little Brother effortlessly blend jazz, R&B, and hip-hop on the track “Give In.” Other guest vocalists inclue Jody Wately, Terry Devos, Lady Alma, Jack Davey, Carina Anderson, and more!
The wait was definitely worth it. "Play With the Changes" is instant vintage and a must have for music lovers everywhere. The vast array of guest vocalists blends perfectly to create, in my opinion, the best album of 2007 so far. Each track is unique in its own way and offers a distinctively different experience that is definitely part of the 4hero tradition of putting out good music.

Ware is best-known for his writing and production work on Marvin Gaye’s "I Want You" album. He’s also collaborated with Quincy Jones, Minnie Riperton and the Isley Brothers. N’Dambi, well-known in R&B’s indie scene, is a former backing vocalist for Erykah Badu. Look for her and Stone’s albums in late summer; Ware’s is slated for spring/early summer.
