Republicans vs. Democrats: Politics, Power, and Sex…Lots of It

[poll id=”24″]

There’s a lot of talk about Democratic former presidential candidate John Edwards admission of his extramarital affair from both sides of the aisle.

But Edwards is just another in a long line of men in politics who have used their power, and in some cases our money, to get sex…and lots of it.

So just which party is “getting it on” the most and with whom?

After reviewing a list of America’s top political scandals, dating back to the 1700s, I can sum it up for you like this:

When it comes to having sex with minors, same-sex or the opposite sex, the Democrats and the Republicans need not be pointing fingers at each other and look no further than their party members who are running just about even in the department.

When it comes to prostitutes, the party of morality, Republican, has the Democrats beat.

Oddly enough, the Republicans also fancy having sex with the same-sex more than Democrats as well. This could be the reason why they are always pushing legislation to curb the civil rights of gays. We call that internalized homophobia.

However, let it be known, that if you work, clerk, intern, or consult for a Democrat, your chances of being sexually harassed are far greater than if you choose to work for a Republican.

And when it comes to extramarital affairs, hands down, the Democrats are on the prowl.

Here’s another goodie:

A list of America’s Top 53 Political Sex Scandals lists Bill Clinton as #1, Gary Hart as #2, James E. McGreevey as #3, Wilbur Mills as #4, Bob Packwood as #5, Grover Cleveland as #6, Gary Condit as #7, Mel Reynolds as #8, Neil Goldschmidt as #9, and Brock Adams as #10.

Political Sex Scandals…The Honorable Mentions

    • Shortly after South Carolina U.S. Senator Strom Thurmond’s death on June 26, 2003, Essie Mae Washington-Williams publicly revealed that she was Strom Thurmond’s illegitimate daughter. She was born to a black maid, Carrie “Tunch” Butler (1909–1947), on October 12, 1925, when Butler was 16 and Thurmond was 22. Thurmond met Washington-Williams when she was 16. He helped pay her way through college and later paid her sums of money in cash or, through a nephew, checks. These payments extended well into her adult life. Washington-Williams has stated that she did not reveal she was Thurmond’s daughter during his lifetime because it “wasn’t to the advantage of either one of us” and that she kept silent out of love and respect for her father. She denies that there was an agreement between the two to keep her connection to Thurmond silent.  After Washington-Williams came forward, the Thurmond family publicly acknowledged her parentage. Many close friends and staff members had long suspected this to have been the case, stating that Thurmond had always taken a great amount of interest in Washington-Williams and that she was granted a degree of access to the Senator more appropriate to a family member than to a member of the public.
    • The Washingtonienne Scandal – In 2004 while a staff assistant for Senator Michael DeWine, Jessica Cutler published a short-lived blog called Washingtonienne describing her life in Washington, D.C. which included graphic details of her sex life. In her blog, Cutler identified her lovers by their initials: “F = married man who pays me for sex. Chief of staff at one of the gov agencies, appointed by Bush.”; “W = a sugar daddy who wants nothing but anal. Keep trying to end it with him, but the money is too good”; “RS = my new office BF with whom I am embroiled in an office sex scandal. The current favorite. At the end of the list, she added: “Shit. I am fucking six guys. Ewwww.” She also wrote that she accepted $400 for sex from a high-level George W. Bush appointee. Cutler justified receiving money from her lovers by saying “I’m sure I am not the only one who makes money on the side this way: How can anybody live on $25K/year?? Her identity was revealed by the blog “Wonkette” in May 2004, which resulted in a scandal on Capitol Hill.
    • Arnold Schwarzenegger (R-CA) California Governor – admitted to inappropriate conduct with women when he was an actor and professional bodybuilder “on rowdy movie sets.”

    The Court of Public Opinion

    • If John Edwards’ political career is done, why isn’t John McCain’s? John McCain had a well-documented affair on his first wife, with his current wife. He has admitted in the books he has written about his life that he ran around with several different women while still married to his first wife. And don’t forget that he left her for a younger, richer woman – multi-millionaire Cindy Hensley who is now Cindy McCain – after she had been severely hurt in a car accident.
So, why are McCain’s actions any more excusable than Edwards’? Because it was thirty years ago? Does that wash it away? Will we be fine with Edwards running for office again in a couple of years because then it will all be in the past? What is the statute of limitations on an affair?

Remember Ronald Reagan, Nancy Reagan and Ross Perot were so upset with how John McCain dealt with his first wife that they didn’t forgive him for a very, very long time. Perot still hasn’t forgiven him. In fact, he said recently about McCain dumping his first wife for Cindy, “McCain is the classic opportunist. He’s always reaching for attention and glory.”

So, I want every pundit who condemns John Edwards today to tell me what the difference between him and McCain is and why John McCain shouldn’t also be run out of politics for his adulterous affairs and what he did to his first wife.
