Alrighty, so the holidays are ovah…how’d you do?
I can tell you straight up that I went into Thanksgiving with the best of intentions and came out on the other side of the New Year 8 pounds heavier. Now whether that’s muscle weight gain or my Grandma’s sweet potato pie or my grandmother’s dressing, I can’t tell you. But what I can say is that the digital scale doesn’t lie, lol. I have got to nip this weight gain in the bud before it gets out of control.
Now while my weight gain isn’t as bad as Oprah’s “How Could I Let This Happen to Me Again,” it reminded me that like with any other addiction, there’s always the chance of relapsing and I’ve got to stay on my P’s and Q’s.
The lowest I have ever been able to get down to on this journey has been 160 pounds and for me that was an accomplishment. I saw it once, maybe twice, but for the most part I level off between 163 and 168 on any given day.
Well, that’s going to change. I want to get down to 150 pounds. That’s my new weight loss goal and I know if I go back to be routine and weighing myself every morning, writing in weight loss journey, and remembering that eggnog is not my friend, I can do it.
I have no desire to ever see my old weight where at my highest I weighed about 250 pounds. Besides, my bank account couldn’t handle having to buy a whole new wardrobe if I did go back to that weight seeing as how I got rid of all my 22s, 20s, 18s 16s, and 14s.
I know my weight gain came from the holidays. I let myself eat what I wanted when I wanted. From the traveling to the hosting of family, between Thanksgiving and New Year’s, I ate all of the things that I swore I had given up. And for more part, I did try. But then there it was, all laid out in front of me and you know families.
“Girl, you better get you some of Grandma’s sweet potato pie. One slice won’t kill you.”
Well maybe not, but after the third slice…
And then there were the late night trips to McDonalds for fries, just because, and all of the must have junk food for movie nights at home.
Holla, if you hear me, lol.
One thing working in my favor is that I am still working out daily…thank God. I play tennis with my coach everyday and even squeeze in extra time on the court with willing partners. Now that it’s January, the Wednesday night group tennis class is back on so I have that too. I still hike the canyon weekly, which I am considering bumping back up to three times a week in the early morning to get some of this extra weight off me quicker. I added four laps around the track before tennis practice on most days. When it was raining and I couldn’t hike or play tennis, I took to dancing at home for 30 minutes. Let me tell you, while I know I have to give up my aspirations of being a dancer in a rap video, I still have my moves. I just can’t pop lock and drop it like I used to, lol.
So here we are, January 5 and it’s back to the grind. That gallon of eggnog, or what’s left of it in my fridge is going to get poured out shortly to ensure that I don’t creep up in the kitchen and pour myself a tall glass of it. I know me and if it’s in there…
I am having second thoughts about my tennis tournament in March. I kind of don’t feel like I am ready for it. My coach thinks I am, but when it’s your ass out there on the court in front of everyone, you’ve got to feel it. Ya dig? I am going to keep practicing for it and I will make up my mind on it by the end of the month. I really want to do it because I feel like it’s the next step in this journey of mine, but I also don’t want to get out there and get my ass kicked on the tennis court. It’s one thing to lose, it’s another to lose badly, lol.
A lot of the folks that I hiked with kinda fell off the map. I hope that with the New Year, folks have a renewed since of spirit as it relates to their weight loss. But like I always tell people, the canyon and the courts aren’t going anywhere, they’ll still be there when you’re ready, lol. And with the economic crunch that most of us are in, hiking is one way to get a great workout for free! The Wednesday night adult group tennis class isn’t free but it’s as close to free as you can get for eight weeks of tennis lessons from a pro, lol, and I have to tell you, it’s a great workout. Look—I didn’t know the first thing about tennis nine months ago and today, I can hold my own on the court. So anything is possible.
Hey if you’re in L.A., come on out and join me…it’s all good, but if it’s not, refer here.
Oh—and just in case you’re wondering, I still like what I see when I’m looking at me when I’m walking past the mirror…

Featured Weight Loss Recipe: Caprese Salad
Hat tip to my girl Choklate for hooking this salad up for me when she stayed with me in October for my birthday. I am hooked!
3 vine-ripe tomatoes, 1/4-inch thick slices
1 pound fresh mozzarella, 1/4-inch thick slices
20 to 30 leaves (about 1 bunch) fresh basil
Extra-virgin olive oil, for drizzling
Coarse salt and pepper
Layer alternating slices of tomatoes and mozzarella, adding a basil leaf between each, on a large, shallow platter. Drizzle the salad with extra-virgin olive oil and season with salt and pepper, to taste.
